Lisbon Unleashed: A Family Weekend in Portugal's Coastal Capital

Join me on a whirlwind weekend in the historic yet hip city of Lisbon. From mouthwatering seafood to stunning hilltop views, there's something for every member of the family.

By Niamh Ashley

Hey fellow wanderers! Just got back from a fabulous weekend in Lisbon with the kiddos, and boy are my feet tired! But every step was worth it. Lisbon is a city that's got it all - history, hip hangouts, and the best grilled sardines. And guess what? My kids ate them, and yours might too!

We started our trip at Belém Tower. Everyone told me it was a must-visit, and they weren't wrong. My little history buffs loved exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site, and it was a great way to kick off our Lisbon adventure. Next up, we hopped on one of Lisbon's iconic trams for a ride up to Alfama. Here, we got lost in the maze of narrow streets, and even stumbled upon a local flea market. Score!

Food, as you know, is always a priority in our travels. We had lunch at Cervejaria Ramiro. I mean, how can you say no to a platter of fresh seafood while in a coastal city, right? And for dinner, we got adventurous at Belcanto - two Michelin stars and a kid-friendly staff. Yes, it's possible!

Now, the kids get tired early but hubby and I had a sneaky plan. We booked a trusted babysitter through a local agency, tucked the kids in at our Airbnb, and headed out to Pensão Amor for a few drinks. This quirky bar used to be a brothel, and its eclectic decor pays homage to its colorful past.

On day two, we visited Lx Factory, a creative hub with shops, restaurants, and street art. We even found a bookstore with a flying bicycle! Hubby and I managed to squeeze in a quick workout at the on-site gym while the kids were at a puppet show.

For our last morning, we had breakfast at Pasteis de Belém. These egg tarts are the real deal, and the perfect way to say adeus to Lisbon.
